Little Leaguer's elbow

What is it?
The medial epicondyle is the point of bone on the inner (medial) elbow. That bone has a growth zone, and the growth zone along with the medial epicondyle in adolescents is called the apophysis. This apophysis can become damaged by repetitive throwing, and it can cause widening of the cartilage of the growth zone, or fragmentation of the bone itself.

What does it feel like?
This is an ache in the inner elbow that occurs gradually at first, and develops into a pain that is so bad a player cannot throw at all since it hurts alot with every throw.

How is it treated?
Nonoperative treatment is strict rest from throwing for about 1 month followed by a well-structured physical therapy and interval throwing and mechanics program. Longer times off from throwing may be needed in some cases. Anti-inflammatory medicines can help some.

Operative treatment is rarely needed, but involves fixation with a metal screw in cases where the medial epicondyle completely fractures.

How long will I be out of throwing?
If nonoperative treatment is successful, about 3 months.
If surgery is required, about 12 months.
