Paget-shcroetter syndrome

What is it?
The subclavian vein drains blood from the arm to the hear, and is located in the shoulder region. With a lot of repetitive throwing, it is possible for that vein to become occluded between the clavicle (collar bone) and first (uppermost) rib. Then, the blood flows so slowly that it clots and blocks flow.

What does this feel like?
This can cause a lot of arm swelling and a heavy-arm feeling, and inabilty to throw.

How is it treated?
Nonoperative treatment is anticoagulation medication (blood thinners).

Operative treatment is however usually required. It involves placing a catheter into the vein and injecting powerful throbolytics (blood clot dissolving medicines), and then removing the first rib.

How long will I be out of throwing?
It is usually a season-ending problem, but return the following season is possible.
